"
Our dear Mother, whose talent for sketching both with pencil and brush I have, I think, hardly mentioned, used sometimes to go out with her block & paints - and sitting down on a camp stool in an olive grove, or orange garden, or on a hill side, forget all home trouble while transmitting to paper the beauty of the scene around us. I was always her companion at these times & found out many years later, when I painted a few flowers for your Father, how very much I had learnt from watching her use of colour at these times."
*Memoirs of Emily Elliott pp30-31
Emily Dougan (1806-1877), the mother of
Emily Elliott (1839-1924) was fond of sketching and we still have one of her sketchbooks, filled in 1856 while travelling through Germany, Switzerland and Northern Italy with her husband
Rev. Charles Boileau Elliott (1803-1875). At around this time, young Emily (aged 17) had been sent to school in Koblenz (
*Memoirs of Emily Elliott p19), which is only ~10 miles north of the locations of the earliest sketches in this book, so it seems very probable that the excursion began with a visit to see her, and it may be that she had finished school at this point and then accompanied her parents on this trip.
N.B. Most of the sketches are dated, but the pages are not necessarily filled in chronological order. Sometimes, perhaps, Emily erased an earlier sketch and drew over it. Below I have rearranged the sketches into chronological order (whenever possible).
The locations depicted in the sketchbook are shown in the interactive map below:
